Admissions Requirements

Admission decisions are based on a very careful, overall assessment of each student's academic preparation and performance, as well as the additional information provided in the application. Note that no single factor is the deciding factor in the decision. Applicants are first considered for admission to the colleges listed in their application, in the order in which they are listed.

General Admission Guidelines

  • Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher and a strong foundation in math and science.
  • Complete College Algebra (or higher) before enrolling at the U of M
    • Fall applicants must have this course completed or in progress by their spring semester.
    • Spring applicants must have this course completed or in progress by their fall semester.
    • Summer courses will NOT be considered.
  • Priority consideration is given to applicants who intend to graduate from CFANS (not from another U of M college).
  • For transfer applicants who have completed fewer than 26 college credits, applications are reviewed for college academics and the following:
    • Successful completion of the high school course requirements
    • High school rank percentile (students from non-ranking schools, and those with GED or other high school equivalency, are given full consideration)
    • ACT or SAT scores
    • Rigor of the high school curriculum

*NOTE: Certain majors also have major-specific prerequisites. Explore the next section to review these factors prior to applying.

More information on admission requirements, review factors, and programs can be found on the U of M admissions website.

Pre-Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering:
Applicants who do not meet CSE transfer requirements can still be considered for the Pre-BBE major if they meet CFANS’ general guidelines

Secondary Review Factors

For all CFANS majors, secondary review factors include, but are not limited to: Grade trends, participation in extracurricular activities related to the major, community involvement, and work experience. High school grades, class rank, and ACT or SAT scores may be factored into the admissions decision for students who have completed less than 26 transferable college credits.

Transferring from within the U of M

Learn about transferring to the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resources Sciences (CFANS) from other colleges or campuses within the University of Minnesota system.

Admission to CFANS is based on an assessment of the applicant's academic record and potential for success in the designated major. Primary review factors include completion of appropriate prerequisite courses and the applicant’s cumulative grade point average. Other factors include the applicant’s progress toward the intended degree, grade point average in major relevant coursework, and grade trends.

Transferring from outside the U of M

  • Transferology shows how courses you have taken or plan to take transfer to the University of Minnesota. You will be able to answer the question “Will my courses transfer?” by adding coursework, exams, and/or military learning experiences to see how many schools in the Transferology network, which includes the U of M, have matching courses that may be awarded when they transfer. You'll need to create an account to start exploring this tool.
  • University of Minnesota transfer resources: To simplify the transfer process, the University of Minnesota, Minnesota state universities, and Minnesota community colleges have developed a Minnesota Transfer Curriculum (MnTC). If you complete the MnTC (either within or separate from an Associate in Arts [A.A.] degree) at a participating school and then transfer to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, you have completed the core, theme, and first-year writing portion of the University's liberal education requirements (you may still need to complete the writing intensive portion of the writing skills requirement.) Such completion must be noted on the official transcript from your school.
