Announcing the Interim Dean of CFANS and Interim Director of MAES

A message from Executive Vice President and Provost Gretchen Ritter

May 21, 2026

From the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost

Dear colleagues,

As I shared in January, Brian Buhr will step down from his role as dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and director of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station on July 1, 2026, returning to the faculty in the Department of Applied Economics.

I am pleased to announce that Linda Nagel, professor and head of CFANS’ Department of Forest Resources, has agreed to serve as interim dean and interim director of MAES starting July 1 and until a permanent dean and director is appointed.

Building on extensive experience, deep institutional knowledge and a longstanding commitment to partnership and academic excellence, Dr. Nagel has demonstrated thoughtful and inclusive leadership; a strong commitment to supporting faculty, staff and students; and a clear understanding of the vital role CFANS plays in advancing our shared mission across Minnesota and beyond.

She will provide continuity and strategic leadership as interim dean and director, working closely with faculty, staff, students and leaders across the University to help sustain momentum on key priorities, including advancing statewide research, teaching, and Extension to feed a growing population, protect the planet, and strengthen Minnesota’s food systems, natural resources, and rural communities.

With a collaborative approach and broad understanding of the University community, she is well-positioned to lead during this important transition. Meanwhile, the search committee’s work for the next dean is underway. Expect an update later this summer, and see the search page on the CFANS website for more information.

As Dr. Buhr returns to faculty, he will build on his distinguished record of teaching and scholarship, recognized through numerous honors, including the CFANS Distinguished Teaching Award, CFANS Distinguished Faculty Award, and the American Agricultural Economics Association Outstanding Policy Contribution Award.

Please join me in thanking Brian Buhr for his dedication, vision and exemplary service to CFANS, MAES and the University over the past 13 years, and in welcoming Linda Nagel to this interim leadership role.

Sincerely,

Gretchen Ritter
Executive Vice President and Provost
