What are some goals the Horticulture Club strives to achieve?

We hope to engage plant lovers all across campus! It is so much fun to see students from so many different majors attend our meetings and talk with them about horticulture and what we love about caring for and learning about plants. We also hope to not only build a strong community but also get students involved in campus happenings and learn a little bit sometimes, too!

What got you involved in the Horticulture Club?

I remember seeing posters and Instagram posts and adding a new plant to my apartment almost every month made me want to get involved. I loved the balance of having fun events and also learning, including floral design from Professor Neil Anderson. The people who went were so kind, and I knew that I wanted to become an officer.

How would you describe the community this group fosters?

We have a very diverse group of people who have very eclectic interests. However, we host different events that engage more people and play to their interests and strengths. We also help each other out, as plants never take a break! Whether that's watering, transplanting, or helping to get materials for an event with flowers, we work together.

What events or traditions does the club participate in?

We always have our end-of-the-year plant sale in the spring semester. Other than that, we like to get creative! We have had plant propagation events, floral arrangements, apple tastings, and trivia nights. We also love to talk to members about what they would like to see.

What are your favorite parts about being a member of the Horticulture Club?

I love how kind everyone is and how knowledgeable they are! I feel like I am learning something new every time I come to a meeting. Having dedicated time to hang out together and do fun activities is very important to have a balanced schedule, and it is something I look forward to.

Horticulture Club encompasses many different specializations; what are some ways that the club touches on those topics?

We have a variety of events so that we can encompass the broad topic of horticulture. We have done events related to horticultural production (like using pines for wreath making), breeding, sale, and education. We hope that we provide opportunities for members to learn or get involved in further opportunities at the University within such a broad topic.

Does the Horticulture Club get involved with other organizations at the U of M or outside the school?

Yes! We have been working our way into collaborative events; we recently had a terrarium-making event with the Insect Club, for example. We love to talk with new people and share our interests. We also promote opportunities outside our club, including LEED training and job/volunteer opportunities.

Would you like to highlight any other information about the club?

We love to be creative and diverse in our ideas. If anyone would like to join, we would love to have you and hear your ideas about how we can make the club even better! Send us an email ([email protected]) or join our next meeting.
