Forest and Natural Resource Management
This major is an excellent choice if you love the outdoors and want to make a positive impact on how natural resources are conserved and managed. The curriculum takes you beyond the classroom during hands-on field experiences in which students get to take up to six weeks of courses in forested and wilderness areas. The FNRM major is the only four-year program in Minnesota that is accredited by the Society of American Foresters. Earning an accredited degree makes students competitive candidates for jobs.
Tracks
Forest Ecosystem Management and Conservation: This track allows you to study the ecology, conservation and management of forests. You are asked to address questions such as, “How can we effectively and sustainably manage forests to ensure healthy and productive forests for future generations?”
Park and Protected Area Management: In this track, you learn how to plan, manage and protect park and wilderness areas for recreation and tourism. You are asked to address questions such as: “How can we increase accessibility for all people to enjoy natural spaces while also protecting the natural resources in those spaces?”
Urban and Community Forestry: This track equips you with skills and knowledge to plan, manage and sustain urban ecosystems. You are asked to address questions such as: “How can we diversify the types of trees in our cities and towns so that we can continue to enjoy them in the face of climate change and invasive species?”
