About Me

As your academic advisor, I am excited to meet you and work with you. I am here to help you plan your classes, connect you with supports/resources when facing challenges, and develop and act on goals to be successful in college, and prepare for your future. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I joined CFANS academic advising after working with students and communities in nonprofit, library, and educational settings, including as a high school guidance counselor. You will need to connect with me near registration time, but I encourage you to make an appointment earlier, or more than once, in the semester! Please let me know of any accommodations you need, or cultural considerations I should know, so I can serve you best during our meeting.

I was born in North Carolina and grew up in Minnesota. I attended college at the University of North Carolina where I participated in service-learning, undergrad research, and campus recreation. Also a Gopher myself, my master's degree in counseling and student personnel comes from the U. Recently, with the goal of learning to use data to help people and organizations reach goals, I completed a graduate certificate in analytics at Saint Mary's University. Outside of work I spend most of my time with my wife and 2 young children, outside whenever possible!

Advising Philosophy

My goal is to help you to find and build on the ways your strengths fit into the classrooms, majors, minors, workplaces, clubs, labs, and more. I want every student to find their “home” or “place” while in school, which sometimes has meant promoting programs for students who lack one. When you need to achieve goals and overcome challenges, I’ve found that practical strategies, which you can jot down and start right away, work best. When you need to weigh different choices, it’s important to think of your values, experiences and other people or things that are most important to you in making a decision. As an educator I look for and work to remove barriers, individual or systemic. I especially enjoy partnering with coworkers and other educators to share ideas, resources, and challenges. I think that a team approach will ultimately benefit you, the student, the most.
