Pre-Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering

A degree in bioproducts and biosystems engineering prepares you to address society’s growing material, food, and energy demands while protecting our environment. You will focus on renewable resources, bioenergy, bio-based products, and biological systems to create a sustainable solution to these global issues.

The Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering major is a joint program between CFANS and the College of Science and Engineering (CSE). You will spend your first 2 years in CFANS completing lower-division requirements (the “pre” program). Then you will work with an academic advisor to transfer to CSE to complete your upper-division coursework. All CSE engineering programs require this application into the upper-division coursework, and the Bachelor of Science in Bioproducts and Biosystems engineering is awarded by CSE. Here's more info on this process.

As a student in this program, you will also have numerous opportunities to gain hands-on experience. In fact, 75% of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering students participate in research and 70% complete paid internships or co-ops during their time at CFANS.

Tracks

Bioproducts Engineering: Students design and develop sustainable processes and products, focusing on manufacturing and end-use applications of “green” products including biofuels, bioenergy, biodegradable plastics, building materials, paper and chemicals.

Environmental and Ecological Engineering: Students explore, develop, and implement effective systems and sound solutions to address human impact on our natural environment, focusing on engineering applications to land and water resources, air and soil quality, land-use management, ecosystem services, ecological restoration, and waste management.

Food Engineering: Students create important products, processes, systems, and solutions to address the world’s growing demand for food security, food safety, and healthy lives by producing, processing, distributing, and storing food and agricultural materials.
