CFANS in 60: Understanding Walleye Populations with Sediment Cores

Grace Hemmelgarn, a conservation sciences graduate student working with Gretchen Hansen in the Fisheries System Ecology Lab at the University of Minnesota, partnered with the Minnesota DNR and the St. Croix Watershed Research Station, Science Museum of Minnesota, to study fish communities at Pelican Lake. 

The team isusing sediment cores from Minnesota lakes to examine fisheries responses to environmental change over the last few hundred years. This work will help them understand how fish communities may respond to current and future stressors like warming, nutrient loading, and invasive species, which will inform management that protects Minnesota's fisheries for the future.
