How Indigenous burning practices could revitalize a northern Minnesota forest

For millennia, Native Americans have used fire to protect the land, replenish native plant life, and create habitat. But a few hundred years of colonial land management extinguished “good fire.” Now, the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe is bringing back Indigenous burning practices in Minnesota’s north-central pine forest.
