Solutions for farmers and the environment

Lindsay Pease, PhD, and Yuxin Miao, PhD, are researching strategies to help farmers manage nutrients and protect water resources, with the goal of maximizing profits for producers and minimizing the impact on Minnesota’s rivers, lakes, and groundwater. Both are part of  the AGREETT (Agricultural Research, Education, Extension and Technology Transfer) program at the University of Minnesota.

Pease is an assistant professor in the Department of Soil, Water and Climate at the U of M’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences (CFANS), and an Extension specialist in nutrient and water management. Her work focuses primarily on nitrogen and phosphorus management in row crop systems with an emphasis on nutrient loss in agricultural runoff.

Miao is an assistant professor in the Department of Soil, Water and Climate and the associate director of the Precision Agriculture Center. He works to develop integrated precision agricultural management systems for food security and sustainable development, using a combination of field measurements; active canopy sensors; UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles); satellite remote sensing; crop growth modeling; and other new technologies to develop innovative solutions that improve agricultural resource management and protect the environment.
