52 years of the Food Science and Nutrition Club
Since 1972, the Food Science and Nutrition (FScN) Club has acted as a community network for students at the University of Minnesota
We interviewed Sai Nisetha, the club’s president, to learn more about the FScN Club's activities and impact.
What are some goals and purposes FScN Club strives to achieve?
The Food Science and Nutrition Club (FScN) at the University of Minnesota aims to foster professional development and community building among its members by providing educational and social activities that connect students with industry professionals. The club promotes academic excellence through participation in competitions, workshops, and tours of food-related companies while also emphasizing community volunteerism and advocacy for healthy, sustainable food practices. By creating a collaborative environment, the FScN Club empowers students to advance their careers and make meaningful contributions to the field of food science and nutrition.
Are there any requirements for being in the club?
Students from any department are welcome to join the Club at the University of Minnesota as long as they have an interest in food science and nutrition. Membership involves active participation in club meetings, events, and activities and a commitment to supporting the club's mission. While there are no specific academic requirements, members are encouraged to engage with the industry and pursue personal and professional development through the club's initiatives.
What got you involved in the FScN Club?
I got involved in FScN Club because I was curious about how food affects our health. When I attended my first club meeting, I was drawn in by the exciting discussions and creative ideas. I felt like I belonged right away. After serving as Vice President last year, becoming President now feels like a natural step for me. I enjoy leading such a lively group and helping others discover the world of food science. The friendships and shared passion for learning keep me coming back to the club—it really feels like a family working together to make a difference.
How would you describe the community this group fosters?
The Club fosters a supportive and inclusive community where members feel like family. From my first meeting, I sensed a strong bond among us, built on shared passion and diverse experiences. We celebrate each other’s achievements and face challenges together, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and encouragement. Whether we're brainstorming for events or simply sharing our personal stories, the genuine connections we form make learning about food science not just informative but truly enjoyable. This vibrant community inspires us to grow both personally and professionally, making our journey in this field memorable.
What events or traditions does the club participate in?
We host info sessions with industry professionals, providing valuable insights and networking opportunities for members. Our club also organizes tours of food-related facilities, giving members a firsthand look at potential career paths. Additionally, we participate in the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) College Bowl, where we compete in a trivia-style contest that tests our knowledge of food science and nutrition. Throughout the year, we also hold social events, workshops, and volunteer activities that promote teamwork and community engagement, creating a well-rounded experience for all members.
What are your favorite parts about being a member of the FScN Club?
I love connecting with fellow students who share a passion for food science and nutrition, and it’s inspiring to hear their diverse perspectives and experiences. Another highlight is the opportunities for professional growth; attending industry talks and participating in hands-on activities really enhances my learning and networking. I also enjoy the fun and engaging events we organize, whether it’s trivia nights, workshops, or community service projects. These experiences not only deepen my understanding of the field but also create lasting friendships and memories.
Since the FScN club is affiliated with other organizations outside of UMN, how do the groups collaborate?
We collaborate with external organizations, such as the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and other professional bodies, to enhance learning and networking opportunities for our members. We participate in various IFT Student Association (IFTSA) activities, which include product development competitions and workshops that allow us to apply our knowledge in real-world scenarios. Additionally, we often host guest speakers from industry partners who share insights and trends in food science, providing valuable perspectives that enrich our understanding. These collaborations help us stay connected with the broader food science community and open doors for internships, job opportunities, and professional development.
The club’s page discusses interconnected “student teams of global food research projects.” What does this entail?
This refers to collaborative initiatives where club members engage in research efforts that address food-related challenges on a global scale. This entails forming diverse teams that work together on projects focused on various aspects of food science, such as sustainability, nutrition, food safety, and innovative food technologies. Members often brainstorm solutions, conduct experiments, and analyze data to contribute to understanding and improving food systems. These projects not only foster teamwork and practical skills but also promote awareness of global issues in food security, health, and environmental impact, preparing students to make meaningful contributions to the field.
“We provide social activities that enhance personal & academic development, connect students with industry members & promote community volunteerism!”
Is there anything else you want to highlight about the club or future opportunities?
We are continually exploring new collaborations, workshops, and industry partnerships to provide our members with hands-on experiences that are crucial for career development. Additionally, as we prepare for future events like the College Bowl and various industry tours, we encourage all members to actively participate and share their ideas for initiatives that can enrich our club's impact. There’s always room for innovation, and we welcome any suggestions on how we can grow together as a community! Please send us an email, and we will add you to the list!
