President's Emerging Scholars (PES) is an educational opportunity program that supports high-achieving, historically underserved students in their pursuit of a bachelor's degree at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities. To learn more about PES, please read more under the Prospective Students drop-down below or visit the program's website.

Prospective Students

Admitted PES students have strong academic and leadership experiences, connect in meaningful ways with their high schools and neighborhoods, and demonstrate resilience through their overcoming of personal and systemic barriers. Students are selected by the Office of Admissions to be a part of PES by looking at these traits in a student’s application.

As a community, PES students are also diverse: Many are the first in their family to attend college, are indigenous students, older students, rural students, student parents, students with disabilities, and multilingual students for whom English is not their first language. PES offers students support and resources at the University-wide and college-specific levels to help them successfully navigate the University.

PES provides students with a $1,000 scholarship their first and fourth years with meaningful participation in the program. The first year they are expected to attend the Fall Conference, and their first three semesters meet with a peer mentor who is also in PES and create an academic, vocational, and personal plan for success and well-being.

Within PES, students are connected to further scholarship opportunities available only to PES students to help them participate in high-impact activities such as research or study abroad. There are also a variety of opportunities at the University-wide and collegiate level for students, including the free Summer Seminar for newly-admitted students. These events are created to aid PES students in making life-long friends and building 21st-century skills needed for college success.
In CFANS, PES students are also required to take a first-year hybrid course to aid in their high school to college transition and learn more about the history of the program. There are multiple events put on at the University-wide and collegiate level for PES students to cultivate community and leave a lasting impact on campus.

  • Time at the U of  M: I did two years of a Ph.D. program (2019-2021), then started this wonderful job in January 2022! 
  • Why I Love PES: As a first-gen college student myself, it's important for me to work in service of students with identities who are underserved in higher ed. College can be a great experience, and I want to do what I can to help each student build that for themselves. PES is a fantastic program to facilitate this, and I'm proud to be a part of it!
