The University of Minnesota's (UMN) Department of Applied Economics (APEC) has programs that foster a diverse and supportive community for women in economics programs. Women in APEC is one such program, specifically geared to celebrating the achievements of women in the APEC department. Hear from board members, Giang Thai, Libby Kula, Casey McNichols, Havy Nguyen, Monique Davis, and Uma Parasuram to learn more about this affinity group on campus.

What are some goals and purposes Women in APEC strive to achieve?

Women in APEC aims to empower and support women within the Applied Economics department by fostering a strong community of advocacy, mentorship, and professional growth. Our mission is to promote diversity, inclusivity, and gender equality while providing resources and opportunities for skill development. We work towards creating an environment where all women can thrive academically and professionally, ensuring their contributions to economics are recognized, respected, and celebrated.

What got you involved in Women in APEC?

We became involved in Women in APEC because we recognized the need for more support and resources for women in the economics field. As a student-led group, we strive to create a welcoming space where women can find mentorship, share experiences, and access opportunities that help them succeed academically and professionally.

How would you describe the community this group fosters?

We welcome women and/or non-binary individuals for group communication and informal social events. However, our formal programs and initiatives are open to all gender identities, emphasizing inclusivity and collaboration within our community.

The community within Women in APEC is one of open communication, support, and collaboration. We provide a safe space where members can share their experiences in the field, build meaningful relationships, and access resources for career development and networking. Our focus is on raising awareness about the challenges that women with careers in economics face, encouraging supportive alliances, and empowering them to achieve their goals.

What events or traditions does the group participate in?

Our annual Galentine’s Day celebration and a showcase of member achievements at the end of each academic year have become our traditions. Additionally, we organize panels, mentorship programs, and professional development workshops to provide valuable learning and networking opportunities.

What are your favorite parts about being a member of Women in APEC?

One of our favorite aspects of being members is the supportive community we have inherited from previous cohorts and strengthened over the years. It is a safe space for members from different backgrounds and research fields to connect, share experiences, and grow together. We truly value these relationships and our group's collaborative spirit.

Women in APEC can have many different interests. How does the group address those topics?

To ensure that we address the diverse interests of our members, we conduct polls and surveys to gather input from our student members. This helps us tailor events and programs that reflect our community's varied interests and needs, allowing us to create a more inclusive and engaging experience for everyone.

Does the group get involved with other organizations at the U of M or outside school?

Yes, Women in APEC collaborates with various organizations within and outside the University of Minnesota. In the past, we joined forces with St. Catherine University and the Minnesota Center for Diversity in Economics (MCDE) for an undergraduate-graduate student mentorship event. Last spring, we also organized a screening of the Women in Economics Symposium at the St. Louis Federal Reserve. These partnerships enhance our resources and broaden opportunities for our members.

What are other ways that the group sets members up for success?

We focus on sharing resources, providing guidance, and building a strong sense of community. Through formal and informal networks, members can access advice, mentorship, and support that help them navigate their academic and professional journeys. We aim to equip women with the tools they need to succeed and thrive in the field of economics.
