CFANS ECHO (Equity Certificate Hosted Online)

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is ECHO?

The ECHO (Equity Certificate Hosted Online) is the University of Minnesota Office for Equity and Diversity’s (OED) online equity and diversity certificate program. The program was created to be exclusively online due to COVID-19 in the spring of 2020. For the time being, it replaces the in-person workshops. The program consists of three main activities for learning: reading materials, watching or listening to video/audio clips, and participating in group discussions. These activities represent and reflect three ways we can learn and grow in equity and diversity work – intellectual learning, emotional processing, and practicing skills.

What is CFANS ECHO?

CFANS ECHO is a duplicate of OED ECHO and is offered by the CFANS Office for Diversity and Inclusion (ODI). ODI Interim Director Tex Ostvig leads the workshops and Program Coordinator Pam Jonkman administers the program. Offered exclusively to CFANS faculty and staff, CFANS ECHO participants can choose to take CFANS ECHO courses, OED ECHO courses, or a combination of both, depending on spots available for each training session.

What if I’ve taken both in-person workshops and ECHO courses?

ECHO courses are based on the in-person certificate workshops by OED and have the same learning topics and objectives. Participants may complete the OED Basic Certificate Program via ECHO, in-person workshops, CFANS ECHO, or a combination of these options. To complete the OED Education Basic Certificate, you must complete all 10 online ECHO courses and/or in-person workshops.

How do I access the course materials for an ECHO course?

Upon enrollment, a confirmation email will be sent to your email address with a link to access the course material via Canvas. If you have issues accessing the course material, please contact

What if I can no longer attend a group discussion?

We encourage participants to do their best to attend the group discussion that they registered for and prioritize this time in their schedules. However, we know emergencies and changes in schedules happen. In those cases, please withdraw from the course via Training Hub as soon as possible. Our courses fill up quickly and we have long waiting lists.  This will allow another person on the waitlist to be automatically enrolled. Contact if you have any questions.

I am only interested in the information and not the certificate.  Can I just get the materials and not attend the discussion?

While our workshops are designed to be stand-alone, you may take any workshops that interest you without getting the certificate. Our workshops are in high demand with long waiting lists, so we do require that you attend the discussion sessions. If you are looking for more resources, please email or check out the Anti-Racism Resources list from the CFANS Diversity Community of Practice.

What if I am waitlisted for a CFANS ECHO course? Am I able to still attend?

Unfortunately, people who have been waitlisted are not able to attend online courses. Training Hub will automatically alert you if you have been added to the course for which you are waitlisted.

May I share the materials I received in the workshop(s) with others (such as work presentations, brochures, etc.)?

These materials are for personal educational use only. If you would like to use the materials in any other way, please contact

What should I expect in a workshop?

Our workshops are highly participatory and interactive. All online workshops include a group discussion, as well as online videos and reading materials. Some of the topics we discuss may bring up emotions or feelings of discomfort. Please take care of yourself while also working to challenge your comfort zone. Please let us know if there are ways we can support you on your learning journey.

Do the workshops need to be taken in any particular order?

These courses are stand-alone and do not need to be taken in any particular order. Participants can enroll or waitlist for courses they have not yet taken. If a CFANS ECHO course someone wishes to take has already been taught, we encourage you to enroll in an OED ECHO course, as they offer multiple dates and times for each of their 10 courses.

The workshop titles have been updated, which ones were which?

You can view this list of previous workshop titles (PDF) matched with the current/updated titles to ensure you are registering for the correct course.

What if I need to arrive late to or leave early from a workshop?

We encourage participants to arrive 5 minutes before the Zoom session starts. If you are 15 minutes late or have to leave 15 minutes before the end of the workshop, we ask that you withdraw from the course and encourage you to enroll in an OED ECHO course

When will future workshops be offered?

At this time, CFANS ODI is offering all 10 courses for the 2022-2023 academic year and again during the summer of 2023. We will announce at a later date if we will offer more sessions for each of the 10 courses.

How many can enroll in a CFANS ECHO workshop?

Currently only 12 participants can enroll in a CFANS ECHO workshop. During discussion for your respective Zoom session, participants may be be randomly split into two discussion groups with Tex Ostvig. If you can not attend, please withdraw via Training Hub.

I have completed the Basic or Advanced Certificate Program. How do I request a certificate of completion?

Fill out the Certificate Completion Request Form here. Once we have received your form, we will send a PDF of the certificate to the email address that you provided in the form. Certificates are sent out at the end of each semester (fall, spring, and summer).

Who do I need to contact if I suddenly can't make the workshop?

You do not need to contact our office directly, but we ask that you please "withdraw" from the workshop in Training Hub as soon as possible.

Who tracks my participation?

Our office tracks attendance through Training Hub. If you do not see a workshop marked as complete, please contact us at We also ask that individuals also keep track of their own participation in case of system changes or errors.  If you are 15 minutes late or have to leave 15 minutes before the end of the workshop, we ask that you withdraw from the course and encourage you to enroll in an OED ECHO courseDue to the nature of the course, we are unable to mark you as complete if you have missed more than 15 minutes of the course.

Can I use paid work time to complete the Basic and Advanced Certificates?

It is at the discretion of your supervisor to permit you to use paid staff time to be used for components of the certificates. Please work with them directly.

If I am not interested in the certificate, may I attend only some of these workshops?

Yes, the workshops are stand-alone, and you may take any workshops that interest you.

I work on a system campus that is not the Twin Cities campus, may I register for a workshop or for the certificate program?

You can register for the OED ECHO courses but not CFANS ECHO courses, which are only for CFANS faculty and staff. For more information about workshops outside of the Twin Cities campus, contact the  OED Office at

Some of my completed workshops seem to be missing from Training Hub. Why are they not showing up?

When the University of Minnesota switched to using Training Hub in 2018, a decision was made to not transfer data from the older PeopleSoft registration system and from ULearn. For those who have taken Equity and Diversity Certificate Workshops through the former PeopleSoft system and/or through ULearn, please note that these past workshops will not be reflected in your current Training Hub records. You can check your complete Training Record (PeopleSoft and ULearn data) through the Office of Human Resources' system by visiting the  Training History Report . NOTE: Only current University employees are able to access this report.

If your question wasn't answered by this FAQ, please reach out to the CFANS Office for Diversity and Inclusion at Thank you!
